Show your best rare shrunken head

i have this huge curiosity. i have never seen or found a rare necro shield with at least decent stats. most of them dont even have staff mods, and if they do, these are crap or the other properties are total crap. so id like to see if you found one that is good.|||Reasonable staffmod heads definitely exist, although the most useful are often grey ones to be made into Rhyme or Splendor, for example.

As part of my Staffmod Grail project in SP, I've run across just about every staffmod at this point. Some of them are rare, for example:

Code:
Corpse Shield
Unraveller Head
Defense: 6
Chance to Block: 8
Durability: 43 of 60
Required Level: 37
Required Strength: 18
Fingerprint: 0xabd69eb
Item Level: 85
Version: Expansion 1.10+
Properties:
+7 to Strength
+8 to Mana
+5-14 poison damage over 3 seconds
Attacker Takes Damage of 9
+1 to Necromancer Skill Levels
+3 to Life Tap (Necromancer Only)
+1 to Attract (Necromancer Only)
+1 to Revive (Necromancer Only)
Repairs 1 Durability in 33 Seconds

I think the ones that are useful often have some utility skills that have a lot of prereqs as staffmods (Revive, Life Tap, Lower Resist, for example.) That way you can save some skill points and still have the utility skills handy for the odd application.

But to be honest, it is quite difficult for a rare head to beat a standard Homonculous, for example.|||Posted in the Rare Show-off thread some time ago, this is a Head which my single pass Golemancer acquired from a Charsi imbue. In the context in which it was found, still the most awesome find I have ever had ...

Code:
Raven Ward
Zombie Head
Defense: 13
Chance to Block: 35%
Durability: 11 of 20
(Necromancer Only)
Required Strength: 14
Required Level: 51
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 91
Fingerprint: 0xf80d04bf
+31 to Life
+4 to Mana
+48% Enhanced Defense
+10% Increased Chance of Blocking
Adds 12-28 poison damage over 4 seconds
+2 to Necromancer Skill Levels
15% Faster Block Rate
+2 to Attract (Necromancer Only)
+3 to Iron Golem (Necromancer Only)
+3 to Golem Mastery (Necromancer Only)
14% Chance to cast Level 5 Charged Bolt when struck

There was an interesting blue shield posted in the trade value forum a while back.

Here is a link, if you wan't to see it.

------

I think the reason why useable, magic or rare shrunken heads are so uncommon has several reasons:

1) The unique/set shrunken heads are extremely good (as has been pointed out) not to mention relatively cheap and easily found.

2) For a fishymancer, finding the perfect shrunken head is impossible, since staffmods like RS and SM are tier 1 (requiring ilvl <= 24 to spawn) and the prefixes Necromancer's (+2 skills) or Golemlord's (+3 summoning skilltab) have affix-levels of 50 (requiring ilvl >= 52 for any qlvl head) and 60 (requiring ilvl >= 62 for any qlvl head) respectively.

3) For a poisonmancer missing out on the -pres of Trang's something completely extraordinary would have to spawn. Like a rare with +2 nec, 2os and Deflecting affixes along with +3PNova staffmod. And not having played a poison necro, I'm not even sure that such a head would suffice.

This leaves us with blue heads like:

+3 Poison and Bone skills

+X Bone Spear / +X Bone Spirit / ...

with Deflecting or Stability suffix

or rare heads with:

+2 Necromancer

+X Bone Spear / +X Bone Spirit / ...

with sockets/resistance/deflecting etc. affixes

I'm sure such shrunken heads would be interesting for a Bonemancer or a summon/bone hybrid, but they are extremely rare drops, and I guess that's why we don't see them traded much.

Indeed, such great heads (+2all or +3 summoning skills with +3 RS and +3SM, for example) cannot drop, but I believe with some strategic rerolling things close to that are at least in theory possible, using an elite cracked/low quality/damage head and the ilvl 1 repair recipe, for example, or imbuing with a low-level character an elite head to get low ilvl but high alvl. Uzziah's guide is place to look for guidance there. Although the guide uses claws for its examples, the analysis applies more broadly. But it would be very very unlikely and almost certainly not worth the trouble. The chance you would get something better than Homonculous is tiny, I would think.|||Quote:

Even a high qlvl cracked head repaired to get ilvl 1 and imbued with a suitable char, will not be able to get (or even be rerolled to get) more than +1 skills while having RS or/and SM as staffmods, as far as I can tell. Made the calculations below a while back in an old post about staffmods:

Code:
2.1 Necromancer; items that may spawn staffmods:

qlvl: Quality level.
Shp: Item can be shopped.
Gam: Item can be gambled.
OsA: Maximum number of sockets at ilvls <= 25.
OsB: Maximum number of sockets at ilvls > 25.
+1: Minimum required ilvl to spawn +1 all skills (affix-lvl = 30).
+2: Minimum required ilvl to spawn +2 all skills (affix-lvl = 50).
+3: Minimum required ilvl to spawn +3 skill tab (affix-lvl = 60).
20fc: Minimum required ilvl to spawn 20% fast cast (affix-lvl = 29).

A rare/imbued Overseer Skull (or ablove in qlvl) can be rerolled with the 6 pskull recipy to get a maximum of +1 skills with staffmods RS and SM, and even a head with +1 all/+3 SM, +3 RS would probably be inferior to a Homunculus due to additional adds to other usefull skills along with high res and block.|||Great info, thanks for working that out!|||ThomasJohnsen: Two things

- Imbues have their ilvl set to clvl+4, input ilvl has nothing to do with it

- When ilvl < qlvl, alvl = qlvl, so any elite necro head can always have +2, right?

Which in turn means that a +2necro 3rs 3sm head is indeed very possible, just very unlikely.|||Quote:

Affixes are generated with this formulae:

Code:
If (ilvl>99) then {ilvl=99}
if (qlvl>ilvl) then {ilvl=qlvl} ;** see note below
if (magic_lvl>0) then {alvl=ilvl+magic_lvl}
else
{
if (ilvl<(99-qlvl/2))
then {alvl=ilvl-qlvl/2}
else {alvl=2*ilvl-99}
}
If (alvl>99) then {alvl=99}

Source: Item generation tutorial

The fact that this piece of code sets ilvl = qlvl (*) if qlvl > ilvl does not mean that alvl = qlvl (as the rest clearly shows). My calculations are based on this code, and the required ilvls for the various shrunken heads are found by applying the above code backwards (ie. starting out with required alvl).

If the above code holds (which I'm quite convinced it does, since noone to my knowledge has challenged it since it's posting 5 years ago) my numbers should be good, and a shrunken head with +2 Necromancer skills is indeed impossible to spawn with tier 1 staffmods.

#EDIT2: (*) Note: the fact that the code sets ilvl = qlvl does not mean that the item will retain that ilvl - it is just a local variable used within the scope of the function.

--------

With regards to the imbue, I'm sure you're right, and I admit that my phrasing in that post was unfortunate.

Uzziah's guide is place to look for guidance there.

Just had a quick browse through that guide. As far as I can see, he isn't really specific about which affixes may spawn with high qlvl items rerolled to lower ilvls. More or less, he just mentions that you may spawn tier 1 staffmods on a high qlvl item allowing some higher affix-levels. The same general principle applies for claws though:

Code:
+---------------------+----+---+---+---+---+----+----+----+-------+
| Claw-type weapons |qlvl|Shp|Gam|OsA|OsB| +1 | +2 | +3 | Speed |
+---------------------+----+---+---+---+---+----+----+----+-------+
| Hand Scythe | 41 | x | x | 2 | 2 | 50 | 70 | 79 | -10 |
| Greater Claws | 45 | x | x | 2 | 3 | 52 | 72 | 79 | -20 |
| Greater Talons | 50 | x | x | 2 | 3 | 55 | 74 | 79 | -30 |
| Scissors Quhab | 54 | x | x | 2 | 3 | 57 | 74 | 79 | 0 |
| Suwayyah | 59 | | x | 2 | 3 | 59 | 74 | 79 | 0 |
| Wrist Sword | 62 | | x | 2 | 3 | -- | 74 | 79 | -10 |
| War Fist | 68 | | x | 2 | 2 | -- | 74 | 79 | 10 |
| Battle Cestus | 73 | | x | 2 | 2 | -- | 74 | 79 | -10 |
| Feral Claws | 78 | x | x | 2 | 3 | -- | 74 | 79 | -20 |
| Runic Talons | 81 | x | x | 2 | 3 | -- | 74 | 79 | -30 |
| Scissors Suwayyah | 85 | x | x | 2 | 3 | -- | 74 | 79 | 0 |
+---------------------+----+---+---+---+---+----+----+----+-------+

and it is impossible to find/manufacture a claw with tier-1 staffmods along with +2 skills or +3 skilltree.
